Diagnosis: Identifying the Cause of Hip Pain

To accurately diagnose the source of hip pain, our specialists conduct:

  • Comprehensive medical history and physical examination
  • Advanced imaging, such as X-ray, CT scan, or MRI

Since hip pain can originate from different anatomical regions, we carefully assess whether your pain is coming from the anterior, posterior, or lateral hip.

If you have arthritis in your hip, platelet rich plasma therapy may help. It uses parts of your own blood to help your body heal itself. PRP can help your hip feel better and work better.

Common Causes of Hip Pain

Hip pain can originate from one of three primary regions, each associated with different underlying conditions:

1. Anterior Hip & Groin Pain

  • Osteoarthritis – Wear-and-tear arthritis affecting the hip joint
  • Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI) – Abnormal contact between the hip bone and socket
  • Hip Labral Tears – Damage to the cartilage that stabilizes the hip joint
  • Hip Fractures – Breaks in the hip bone, common in older adults

2. Posterior Hip & Buttock Pain

  • Piriformis Syndrome – Sciatic nerve compression by the piriformis muscle
  • Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Dysfunction – Pain from the joint connecting the pelvis to the spine
  • Lumbar Radiculopathy – Nerve irritation from the lower spine affecting the hip
  • Facet Joint Arthritis – Degeneration of spinal joints causing referred pain
  • Ischiofemoral Impingement (rare) – Pinching of soft tissue between bones
  • Vascular Claudication – Blood flow issues causing pain with movement

3. Lateral Hip Pain

  • Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS) – Inflammation of the tendons surrounding the hip
  • Muscle Strains & Tears – Injury to the hip abductor muscles

If hip pain is limiting your mobility, OPS Surgery Center offers customized treatment options to help you move pain-free.

Treatments

Once your correct diagnosis is established, The OPS Surgery Center team of orthopedic and pain management specialists will create a customized plan for you. If the source of pain is determined to be from within the hip, treatment may include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), physical therapy, and temporarily modifying your activities. Trochanteric bursa injections may be offered if you have bursitis and rest/NSAIDs aren’t effective.

We also offer cutting edge regenerative medicine treatments to help heal damaged tissues, restore function, and delay degenerative processes like arthritis. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains growth factors that accelerate healing and trigger new tissue growth. Stem cell therapy can produce new healthy cells to repair and replace damaged ones. The OPS Surgery Center team of orthopedic and pain management specialists may offer PRP treatment alone or in conjunction with stem cell therapy as an option.
