Sacroiliac Joint Injection

What is it?

Sacroiliac Joint Injection (SI Joint Injection) at OPS Surgery Center

A sacroiliac (SI) joint injection is a minimally invasive procedure used to reduce inflammation and relieve pain in the sacroiliac joint, which connects the lower spine to the pelvis. This injection can serve both therapeutic and diagnostic purposes, helping to determine whether the SI joint is the source of your pain while also providing relief.

If you are experiencing lower back, hip, or pelvic pain, an SI joint injection may be an effective treatment option.

Am I a Good Candidate for an SI Joint Injection?

You may benefit from an SI joint injection if you have:

  • Inflammation in the sacroiliac joint
  • Chronic lower back pain or pelvic discomfort
  • Pain that worsens with sitting, standing, or walking

For patients with persistent SI joint pain, this procedure can provide targeted relief and help determine the best long-term treatment plan.

Schedule a consultation at OPS Surgery Center to find out if an SI joint injection is right for you.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Before your procedure, your doctor will explain the process in detail and answer any questions you may have.

Preparation

  • If you choose sedation, avoid eating or drinking for eight hours before the procedure and arrange for someone to drive you home.
  • You may need to pause certain medications (such as blood thinners) several days before your procedure.

Procedure Steps

  1. Sterile Environment & Monitoring
    • The procedure is performed in a sterile operating room using image guidance to ensure accuracy.
    • Vital signs are monitored, and oxygen is provided if sedation is used.
  2. Injection Process
    • Sterile cleaning of the injection site
    • Local anesthesia to numb the area
    • Precise needle placement using image guidance
    • Contrast dye injection to confirm proper positioning
    • Administration of anti-inflammatory medication
  3. Completion & Recovery
    • Needles are removed, and bandages are applied
    • You will be monitored in the recovery room before being discharged home

Your sacroiliac joints (we call them the "SI" joints) are the places where your hips meet your spine. These joints don't have a lot of flexibility, but they do move slightly as you move your body. And if SI joints become damaged or diseased, it can be painful.

When Will I Experience Pain Relief?

  • Pain relief typically begins within 3 to 7 days, though some patients may take up to 14 days to feel the full effects.
  • Relief duration varies based on the severity of inflammation and the underlying condition. Some patients experience complete relief, while others may require a second injection for optimal results.

If SI joint pain persists despite injections, minimally invasive surgical options may be considered to correct the issue.
